Health/Human Services
Dorcas Circle is a volunteer-run organization improving food access, health, and quality of life in Huerfano County. Its food bank and thrift store help neighbors access food, clothing, household items, and support.
Dorcas Circle works to improve food access, health and quality of life in Huerfano County through the power of VOLUNTEERISM, INCLUSIVITY, and COLLABORATION. Dorcas Circle is run entirely by a group of tireless volunteers. We believe that everyone deserves access to basic necessities like food and clothing, regardless of their financial situation. Dorcas is a one-stop-shop in Huerfano County for our residents to find food, free or greatly reduced clothing, small wares, and overall support.
Arts & Culture
El Fandango Dance shares Mexican folklórico traditions with dancers age seven through adulthood across Huerfano County. The nonprofit plans to introduce a preschool program as it continues to grow.
El Fandango Dance has proudly shared the tradition of Mexican folklórico dance in Walsenburg and Huerfano County since 1938. What began at Walsenburg High School has grown into a nonprofit, county-wide group welcoming dancers from age 7 through adults. Over the years, the group has ranged from 5 to 60 dancers. We are excited to continue growing and will soon offer a preschool program to introduce our youngest dancers to the joy of folklórico.
Education
Huerfano Heritage Center preserves local history through archives, exhibits, and research. Donations support the care and digitization of newspapers, photographs, documents, maps, and artifacts, along with public programs and services.
Your support will allow us to continue to make available our historical archived information to the public who are seeking details of their history and their past. Donations are used to archive documents, and offer displays of photos, maps, and artifacts. Funding would also be used to digitize local newspapers and photos from the past. We continually strive to arrange our artifact collection so that it is easily accessible to patrons for research. We wish to continue offering the programs and services that make a positive impact in our community.
Health/Human Services
La Clinica provides a space for accessible, high-quality physical and mental health services to individuals and families in Huerfano County. We are committed to improving the overall well-being of our community through personalized care, education and community partnerships.
Other
La Veta Regional Library District is renovating the former La Veta Elementary School for its East Branch. Gifts support program spaces, artistic activities, and an expanded library of tools, kitchen equipment, instruments, and more.
Imagine borrowing a tool, a kitchen gadget, or an instrument, then staying to make art or join a program. That is the vision for the East Branch of the La Veta Regional Library District. We are renovating the former La Veta Elementary School, inside and out, playground included, to create rooms for programs and artistic creation, plus an expanded library of things, including a kitchen library, tool library, music library, and more. Your Huerfano Gives gift helps make it happen. Give this December and help us build a library where neighbors can borrow, learn, and create.

Animal Welfare
Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association helps Huerfano County residents access reduced-cost spay and neuter services, vaccinations, and microchips. It also supports local shelters, rescue organizations, veterinary resources, and animal welfare education.
healthy pets for huerfano LHAWA is a non-profit 501c3 entity that was created to enhance the care and living conditions of domestic animals within Huerfano County. Our main emphasis is on population control, disease prevention, bringing veterinarian resources to the county, support of the local animal control or shelters and local animal rescue organizations, and educating the community on animal care issues. LHAWA is organized exclusively for charitable and education purposes to be able to provide Huerfano County residents with reduced spay, neuter, vaccinations, and microchips to our local cat and dog populations.
Recreation
Scenic Highway of Legends is building and maintaining an interpretive wayfinding system. The project helps visitors discover the Byway’s recreation opportunities and learn about the distinctive geology along the route.

The Spanish Peaks HealthCare Foundation is raising funds to strengthen access to quality healthcare and healthy living in Huerfano County. Spark’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program connects adults 55 and older with service opportunities in Huerfano County. Gifts support mileage reimbursement so volunteers can keep helping local nonprofits and neighbors.

Through Spark’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), adults 55+ serve Huerfano County by supporting food access, environmental stewardship, and the day-to-day work of local nonprofits. Trenda Howard Legacy Foundation honors an educator who helped young people find their voices and pursue their goals. The foundation provides scholarships and other educational opportunities for college-bound students.
Trenda Howard dedicated her life to lifting others up, helping young people find their voices, and empowering them to chase their dreams. She saw potential in every student she met and made it her mission to nurture their confidence, ambition, and ability to create change. The Trenda HowardLegacy Foundation's mission is to provide scholarships and other educational opportunities for college-bound students in memory of Teacher and Family member, Trenda Howard.

Wellfuerno’s work at Walsenburg Bark Park and Social Space brings neighbors together. Campaign gifts support concession stand upgrades and restoration of the historic sports field to make more local events possible.
Wellfuerno’s mission at the Walsenburg Bark park is to revitalize our community through vibrant, inclusive public spaces. By fostering connection, we create a welcoming environment for residents and four-legged friends. Funding from Huerfano Gives will directly support critical upgrades to our concession stand and help restore our historic sports field. This essential transformation allows us to host more local events, preserve our heritage, and expand outreach. Together, we can turn this gathering spot into a powerful hub for ongoing community good.
Education
Walsenburg Mining Museum preserves the history of coal mining in Huerfano County. Gifts support research, artifacts, exhibits, and information for museum visitors, families tracing their heritage, and participants in mining site tours.
Support from The 12 Days of Giving will assist the Walsenburg Mining Museum to continue to offer historical information regarding the coal mining industry presence in Huerfano County. Families with ancestors who have been involved in the coal mining industry find solace and closure when research yields information about their heritage. The current location of The Mining Museum in the old Huerfano County Jail provides and showcases another faucet of Huerfano County history. Your support will enable the Walsenburg Mining Museum to be able to search for and provide additional information and artifacts, continuing to build displays for our patrons’ interest. We would be able to prepare informational packets for attendees of the Museum and mining site tours.
