The Fox opened in 1917 as the Star Theatre. The Fox name and the Art Deco marquee came in 1941. It showed movies to coal-country Walsenburg for decades before going dark in 1986.
Now it's coming back. Spanish Peaks Community Foundation is restoring the Fox under a 40-year agreement with Huerfano County, and the renovation is fully funded. When the doors open, the Fox will be what it always was: a working cinema and community theater, with a working marquee on Main Street.
The money came from Huerfano County, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, History Colorado's State Historical Fund, the Colorado Energy Office, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, El Pomar Foundation, the Gates Family Foundation, and the Edmund T. & Eleanor Quick Foundation. Thank you.
