Mariachi at the Fox: weekly lessons begin Fridays in Walsenburg

WALSENBURG — The Fox Theatre Walsenburg is welcoming a new weekly music-education program to its Studio at 711 Main Street: Mariachi at the Fox, led by Mariachi Diamante of Pueblo.

Lessons meet every Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. All levels are welcome. Singers, instrumentalists, beginners, experienced musicians, and students interested in the visual tradition of mariachi — including costume — are invited to join.

Mariachi Diamante’s instruction centers the traditional mariachi ensemble: voice, violin, trumpet, guitarrón, vihuela, and guitar. The group’s official classes page describes the program as a way to preserve and share Mexican musical traditions while making mariachi accessible to the next generation.

“Mariachi is a music made for bringing people together,” said Fox Theatre organizers. “The studio gives people in Walsenburg and the surrounding communities a place to learn, listen, practice, and build something together every week.”

Mariachi Diamante is a Pueblo-based family group founded in 2019 by David Benavidez Jr., according to KRDO’s 2026 coverage. The group has also been featured by KOAA News5 and at the Southwest Mariachi Conference at MSU Denver. An earlier Fox/Spanish Peaks Community Foundation release, Libros y Gritos, documents the group’s 2025 collaboration with local families in Huerfano County.

People interested in participating can register through Mariachi Diamante’s class form. The form lists Walsenburg on Fridays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and asks students to indicate their musical experience and instrument of interest.
