Fox Walsenburg

Movie on the Mountain 2026 — Brother Bear at Cuchara Mountain Park

WALSENBURG — Movie on the Mountain, presented by Bachman & Associates, returns Friday, July 17, 2026 at Cuchara Mountain Park, 1234 Panadero Ave, La Veta, CO 81055.

Now in its fifth year, the event is the Fox’s annual outdoor cinema night for mountain-area residents and summer visitors.

Feature film: Brother Bear (2003). The event begins at 7:30pm, with the movie at sunset. Bring blankets and chairs. Admission is free, and donations will be collected for Panadero Ski Corp, the nonprofit that operates and manages Cuchara Mountain Park under an agreement with Huerfano County.

The Fox operates the movie night: our crew sets up the giant inflatable screen, projection and AV equipment, and fresh popcorn concessions.

Directions

Cuchara Mountain Park’s Plan Your Visit page says the park is off the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway, State Highway 12.

From Walsenburg, head west on US 160, exit at La Veta onto State Highway 12, then turn onto Panadero Avenue south of Cuchara and follow signs to the Cuchara Mountain Park lot. The park lists the drive from Walsenburg at about 40 minutes.

From Trinidad, take State Highway 12 west for about 52 miles over Cuchara Pass, then turn onto Panadero Avenue south of Cuchara and follow signs to the park lot. The park recommends the Walsenburg route instead during winter driving conditions.

From Alamosa on Highway 160, exit at La Veta on County Road 450, continue through La Veta to Highway 12, then turn onto Panadero Avenue south of Cuchara and follow signs to the park lot.

Weather and sunset

Sunset at Cuchara Mountain Park is about 8:21pm MDT on Friday, July 17. The event begins at 7:30pm and the movie starts at sunset.

Updated Friday morning, July 17: the National Weather Service point forecast near the park base calls for a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms through the day, with showers most likely around midday and a high near 68°F. For the 7:30pm event, the Friday-night forecast has a 20% chance of showers or thunderstorms before 8pm, then mostly clear skies, with temperatures falling toward a low near 49°F. Bring a rain layer and a warm layer, and check the linked forecast before heading up.

Sunset timing was checked against the NOAA Solar Calculator for the Cuchara Mountain Park area.

Movie on the Mountain brings free outdoor cinema to Cuchara Mountain Park in Spanish Peaks Country, near the San Isabel National Forest and the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway.

    What’s in a name?

    Bear Lake lore

The guide recounts a story that a trapped bear dragged its trap and anchoring boulder into the lake and drowned, inspiring the lake’s name. We found no independent historical source for the account, so it is presented here as local lore rather than established history.

    A little about La Veta

According to the state’s Highway of Legends history, Huerfano County’s first coal mine was the Walsen Mine near Walsenburg, opened in 1876. Coal then grew into a major county industry.

La Veta is Spanish for “The Vein.”

Francisco Fort became the commercial center as settlement expanded around it.

This small town sits at roughly 7,000 feet in elevation.
