Fundraising continues for Fox Theatre projector
WALSENBURG — The film industry announced the pending conversion from 35mm film to digital distribution. To keep showing new movies at the Fox, the theatre would need a digital projector at an estimated cost of $70,000.
The Spanish Peaks Alliance for Arts and Education (SPAAE) took on fundraising. In October, more than 4,000 letters went to every postal address in Huerfano County. By February, $16,000 had come in from almost 200 people and organizations.
SPAAE planned a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at John Mall High School and continued looking for ways to close the gap before the industry conversion deadline. Weekend movie revenue had sustained the theatre for fifteen years — and SPAAE warned that attendance trends would determine whether the Fox could stay open long enough to finish the upgrade.
